So good... it's criminal!
Challenge #30 - Out of Character? by Gus
Summary: July - August 2006

"Lily’s Rule #3: Any out of character action can be made in character with enough lead-up and justification in terms of a character’s canon traits. Most are not worth the trouble."
- The White Lily, Lily's Rules

We have all been confronted by ideas and fics which focus around a dreaded Out Of Character senario. Artemis at a school dance, the Fowls letting a random girl into their Manor, or Holly leaving behind her career to follow a love interrest. But what about Artemis voluntarily on his knees? Or Opal and Briar, so scared of love that they fall in lust? Or Briar Cudgeon, serial killer?

Brilliant stories can come out of implausible ideas. So search through those plot bunnies for one dismissed as impossible, and make it possible.

The fic must contain a reference to yourself. It doesn't have to be a character, and you don't have to tell us what it is (say, if it's your real name). You can use your avatar (so The White Lily could have a lily flower feature), a nickname, or your real name/personality.

Any questions about the challenge should be sent to blueyeti (at) gmail (dot) com.

And now, the standard ground rules:

  • Any pairings may be used.
  • Submissions will be judged on normal marking criteria and must have that x-factor (what makes it an unforgettable fic) to win either a Golden, Silver or Bronze Acorn award.
  • All aspects of the challenge must be answered in the part(s) of the story submitted for marking.
  • You can not write a new chapter/part/out-take for a fanfiction story that already exists (whether it's a story by yourself or by another author) unless your challenge entry does not need knowledge of the original story to be understood by our judges, and, if it's written by another author, the permission of this author to use their story as your basis.

Responses should be in by the 31st of August, 2006, but late arrivals are always welcome if you can't finish on time. Your story will only be archived after the challenge is completed. Fics may be submitted in html, doc, or rtf formatting, or by pasting the fic into an email. All fics submitted as challenges are archived on Criminality.

Submissions should be sent to criminality - submit @ popullus . net (without spaces) with the subject "CHALLENGE 30", the details you want to see on your author's bio (if you don't already have a story archived with us) and the summary, genre, rating, pairings and warnings for the fic.
