Summary: Alternate Universe fics (also known as AU fics) can be created in a number of different ways. The author (aka. you) can choose to change the way some canon event occured (eg. Holly was unable to heal Angeline at the end of AF) in oder to explore the consequences of this change. Completely changing the universe in which canon occurs is also an option (say, if Artemis and the other characters had been born in the middle ages instead of modern times). Disregarding some aspect of history (such as Napoleon winning the Battle of Waterloo etc) is also a viable way to create an AU.
In Which I Point Out a Plot Hole or Two by FairyHunter [700 words, pg-13, drama, pairing: none] In this fic, everything is so canon it's AU. I fixed a few of the plot holes of the first book not by eliminating them, but by giving them the reality due to any bit of canon. It takes place near the end of the time stop.
